20mph Speed Limit Update

Safer Roads on UPLAWMOOR’S horizon!

Dear Uplawmoor Community,

Your feedback from the Community Census 2025 made it crystal clear: road safety is a top priority, with many of you calling for 20mph limits throughout the village to protect families, walkers, and cyclists. We’re excited to share a major win – East Renfrewshire Council has approved the rollout of 20mph speed limits on over 1,100 residential streets across the area, including key roads in Uplawmoor!

Why 20mph Matters Dropping from 30mph to 20mph makes a huge difference: pedestrians are seven times more likely to survive a collision at the lower speed. This aligns with Scotland’s national push for safer streets by the end of 2025, reducing noise, encouraging active travel, and creating calmer neighborhoods – exactly what you told us you want.

Timeline for Uplawmoor

  • Approval: The council’s Cabinet gave the green light in November 2025.
  • Rollout Start: Implementation begins 1 December 2025, with signs and road markings going up right away.
  • Full Effect: Expect to see changes across affected roads by early 2026, with monitoring to ensure compliance. (Main arterial roads like the full B771 may stay at 30mph, but residential sections will drop to 20mph.)

Key Uplawmoor Roads Getting the 20mph Treatment Based on the council’s proposals, here’s a spotlight on the main residential roads in our village that will be included (use the interactive map below for your exact street):

  • Tannoch Road (village core, near Mure Hall and the school – top priority for safety)
  • Neilston Road (approach from Neilston, including residential stretches)
  • Barrhead Road (through-village sections)
  • Uplawmoor Road (local access routes)
  • Drive Road and Castburn (quiet residential spurs)
  • Lochlibo Road (towards the glen and paths)
  • B771 (village boundary sections) – residential parts only; busier trunk sections may remain 30mph initially

These changes will start with simple signs and markings, and the council will watch for any hot spots needing extra measures like speed humps.
